Ubuntu 10.04 free computing for normal people!

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Ubuntu 10.04 is out, this is the major Release for Ubuntu. Well it looks since ubuntu 9.04 that ubuntu is getting its act together, and taking on M$ and Apple. The focous has changed on the project and is now more user based, and breaking away from the nerds. Which means that its becoming mainstream. This is a good thing, If the nerds adopt, then you have got a real chance of the non-nerd users adopting. The Cloud services that Ubuntu is adding on, Could be the key to Monetizing ubuntu, and making it all pay. Maybe people will eventually realize that a computer is a computer and an OS is just an OS, Just as a word processor is just a word processor, and doesn’t have to be Word. or word 2003 or Word 2007 or what ever version of word we are on!… On thing I hope with Open office, is that UI design stays consistent, as having to explain the differences between the familiarity between office 2003 and office 2007, can take up considerable time and can waist considerable amounts of brain cycles.

Facebook Privacy fun again

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Face-book has done it again, privacy settings have been changed, or modified, basically you have to opt in to privacy. The EFF have came out against this again.

Go to Account > Privacy Settings > Applications and Websites > Instant Personalization Pilot Program and uncheck “Allow”–it’…s at the bottom of the page.

I surpose its just facebook being “facebook”, and making sucking us into the facebook web! where they can monetize us!

Facebook used in court

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Well I’m not sure if this is a first or not, but it caught my eye reading “The Paper” as in the Irish examiner, where Facebook posts were used to help clear his dentist client of sexual assault. it think that this is an interesting development, It seems that Facebook is moving in to everywhere, even the courts.

Iphone v4 leaked and privacy

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Spare a taught for a poor a poor developer, he allegedly let the Iphone v4 on a stool in a bar in appleville. Now he’s been facebooked, googled and flickered, and any public data that is on him is now circulating the world wide web. I have some major concerns about facebook and those fears seem to be coming home to roost….. Heaven for bit that he might have been mistakenly identified.  it looks like trial and jury on the Internet.

you pay penuts you get monkeys

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

I hate people who complain when they have to pay people to fix a PC from them, expect it done for free or as cheap as possible, Then afterwards, the cheap job it doesn’t work.

When some one plasters a wall or builds a house, u expect them to work for free? …. U got  a cheap job done, so you got problems… well “you pay penuts you get monkeys”, get a professional and expect to spend in the region of €150+, a good IT professional will reinstall and will configure your system so that it will not break again in a hurry.

What should you expect:

  • A detailed breakdown of what he/she is going to do
  • A backup of your data before he/she does anything
  • A format of the hard drive
  • A reinstall of the system (You should expect to present the reinstall disks to them) ……but I lost the disk, a nice new copy of XP or Vista will cost in the region of €100+
  • Get your data back onto your system
  • A print out of when the reinstall was done, using system information on windows
  • Getting the system configured so that you are not an administrator when you are not generally using the system

There’s a few more things to do, but don’t be surprised if it takes he/she more than a day at least, when the rebuild the system from scratch, even better if they have a sys-preped image.

A salad costs more than a Big Mac

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Just heard about this on dig,  basically they measured subsidies and put them against our corect daily nutritional intake, I appears to be very out of whack. Vegetable growers take note and also Ireland should take note, I like my beef, but veg might be handy too. Maybe if the veg growers got some of the  subsidies that beef famers get, it could make a big difference in our diet, well maybe!

Iphone Discovers multi tasking…… and text on a page! (aka a book)

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Well Iphone is now on its 4th generation OS and its finally found multi tasking, If I remember rightly the android had this and some of the nokia’s also…. so could it be that apple is now chasing the market. It remindes me of the war that was between apple and the microsoft back in the 80’s seems like somethings never change!

And wait for it there’s going to be e-books, that is text on a page, I remember we were doing that too in the 80’s and even the phones at the start of the 00’s could do that too! intresting one! Could this be Steve’ie J. repackaging books!!!

Looking for a way to get around wireless charges on 3g with more than one device! I haven’t seen this on O2 or any other Irish providers, but it could be handy!
